Before watching this movie, I was trying to imagine what I would shoot if I’d like to make a movie named “Life Out of Balance”. It is easy to see that the director adopted a brand-new style to make a documentary: there is no dialogue, no plot—only music and images, scenes of both sheer nature and mankind, as a result, an effect of absolute shock is achieved through this way. The film's title is quite weird, which is what the director did on purpose to make people appreciate the visual arts masterpiece without knowing what Koyaanisqatsi means beforehand, at the same time think about what modernity has brought to the world.  The director used computer program-controlled technology(which is proved to be wrong by my advisor) as well as editing pictures by pure Montage to achieve special effects. By using delayed effects of exposure and fast forward pictures, the film reflected a sharp contrast between the pure, serene natural beauty of aesthetic delight and busy street scenes of metropolitan life. In my opinion, the director seems to be a preacher trying to reveal how the so-called “industrial civilization” has done evil to Mother Nature and expressed his deep concern on this matter: Modernity, something good that can be beneficial to all or evil which could destroy anything at its own will? However, the film did not preach to anyone on the theme while expressed it in a comfortable (maybe to many people it is not comfortable at all, more like torture) and loose way and left a lot of space for its audience to reflect.  What struck me most is the second half of the film; human beings create and produce numerous machines which are viewed as symbols of modern society, human civilization. Skyscrapers and sea of cars have replaced grassland, transportations rushed into people’s life… All the scenes, all of a sudden, speed to a seeming unstoppable state, which symbolizes human’s strong wish and desire to reconstruct the world. However, after the world is rebuilt, it becomes out of balance as well as human beings. They begin to live a mechanic life like a machine, an assembly line, always work, and always produce without simply knowing what they are making and where they should go. I was overwhelmed especially by the equation E=mc^2 on an aircraft carrier, it is this very equation that made it possible for us to witness the “unparalleled” mushroom cloud. The reason we human make use of science and then create machines or weapons is to conquer the nature, to show we have power. But after all these done, what we left the world is merely damages, pollutions. Human-orientation is not like this, human beings are important, but what about our Mother Nature? It is something that could be far at our disposal. Have we thought about next generations? Is this, a wounded world, what we want to leave behind? It started, or maybe just fueled many thoughts that have again made me observe the world around me more closely in a way both sad and encouraging. I say sad because I'm aware that there's a tremendous amount of wrong in the process of modernization and we're all just ignoring or living in spite of it for the many benefits it could bring us; I say encouraging because I never imagined before that someone would bother to make such a film like this to arouse the consciousness of humanity deep in our heart. To me, at the very end of the film, the falling of a burnt rocket is a symbol of the fall of humanity, a doomed destiny of human beings if they continue to conquer nature at their will. I’d like to make a wild guess about the purpose of Godfrey Reggio using Koyaanisqatsi as the film’s name—maybe from an Indian’s point of view, it is because we live our life without any change day after day and lose connection with the earth, the nature where they gain power and inspiration that we in the end go on a chaotic, crazy life out of balance. Maybe, maybe, human beings can never go back to what they used to be in ancient times, and never get the inner peace they always long for in hustle and bustle. What is the meaning of life? Why cannot we live a simple life as how our ancestors did in this material world? Everyone may be in need of an answer, I guess.
